Strasbourg is the capital of the Grand Est region and the prefecture of Bas-Rhin, on the left bank of the Rhine on the German border. With nearly 290,000 inhabitants and more than 500,000 in the Eurométropole, it is the main urban centre of Alsace and has a Muslim community established over several generations, served by around a dozen places of worship spread across the city and its neighbourhoods.

Public transport access
Strasbourg is served by the central railway station, connected to Paris in 1 h 45 by TGV and to every major city in Grand Est. The CTS network has six tramway lines and a dense bus network covering the whole Eurométropole, including Kehl on the German side. The city is linked to the A35 motorway running north to south and to the A4 towards Paris and Metz. Strasbourg-Entzheim airport is around fifteen minutes from the centre.

Strasbourg is home to Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Grande Île listed by UNESCO, the Petite France quarter with its half-timbered houses, the European Parliament, the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights. Halal shops, butchers and grocers are accessible in several neighbourhoods, in particular in Meinau, Cronenbourg, Hautepierre and Neuhof. The Christmas market and the universities of the Palais universitaire anchor the city in a long cultural tradition.
