Mosques in Marseille

Marseille is France's second city and a historic gateway to the Mediterranean. It hosts one of the country's oldest and largest Muslim communities, shaped by more than a century of successive migrations from Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, the Comoros, Senegal and Turkey. Its mosques reflect that diversity: large neighbourhood halls in the northern districts, quieter places in the old centre, more recent buildings in the southern quarters. Where the mosques are

Muslim life in Marseille is spread across the whole city, with a stronger density in the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th arrondissements, home to most of the families who came during the great waves of North African migration in the 1960s and 1970s. This is where you find the Islâh Mosque, the Cedars Mosque, the Bilal Ben Rabah Mosque, the As-Sunna Grand Mosque and the El Imane Mosque. The city centre holds older places, often set inside converted workshops or shops, like the Grands Carmes Mosque in the 2nd arrondissement. In the south, the Al Fourqane La Cayolle Mosque serves the neighbourhood of the same name.

Getting between mosques

The metro reaches most mosques in the centre and the first ring, with line 1 running east to Timone and line 2 running north to Bougainville. The tramway extends the network north and east, while the bus is often the most direct option for outlying places such as L'Estaque by the sea or Font-Vert in the 14th. For the Bosquet Mosque, on the far eastern edge of the city, driving is usually easier. Street parking gets difficult around Friday prayer times in the denser districts.

A long-awaited grand mosque

Marseille has been waiting since the 1990s for a grand mosque built to match the size of the city. Several projects have come and gone, notably one in the 15th arrondissement in the 2000s, without any of them reaching an actual construction site. Without one unifying place, worship life stays spread across the neighbourhood mosques, several of which act in practice as major venues, first among them the Islâh Mosque and the As-Sunna Grand Mosque.

Ramadan and feast days

During Ramadan, the main mosques hold Tarawih prayers every evening and serve collective iftars at varying rhythms. Halal shops cluster along Boulevard National, Cours Belsunce, Rue d'Aix and around the Prado market. For Eid, several mosques coordinate a morning prayer in venues booked for the occasion, able to hold several thousand worshippers.

Marseille and its metropolitan area
