The Cedars Mosque is a place of prayer in the Saint-Just district, in the 14th arrondissement of Marseille. Set on Rue de Marathon, it welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers and for the Friday prayer.
Getting there
Saint-Just is well served by metro line 1 at Saint-Just station, a few minutes' walk from the mosque. Tramway T1 and T3 also run through the area. By car, access is via Boulevard des Aygalades and its side streets, with easier parking on residential streets outside Friday noon.
The neighbourhood
Saint-Just combines the administrative hub of the department, around the former Hôtel du Département, with a working-class residential fabric. The neighbourhood was shaped by North African, Comorian and West African migration, with a dense associative life. Halal shops, butchers and grocers are found in the area, especially on the routes towards Le Merlan and Malpassé. Parc de la Moline provides a green space.
Practical advice for a visit
The hall serves an active community and attendance is heavier on Friday noon. A first visit is easier on a weekday, outside Ramadan Tarawih night prayers. Shoes come off before entering the prayer hall, clothing should cover shoulders and legs, and women cover their hair. Quiet is expected as soon as you step inside.
Other mosques in Marseille
The north of Marseille has several other prayer venues. The Font-Vert Mosque in the 14th, the Islâh Mosque in Saint-Louis, the Mariam Mosque also in Saint-Louis, the As-Sunna Grand Mosque in the 3rd and the L'Estaque Mosque along the coastline are among the options accessible from Saint-Just.
