Aubagne sits about fifteen kilometres east of Marseille, in a valley bordered by the Garlaban massif and the Sainte-Baume range. The town is known for its market, its pottery industry and as the birthplace of Marcel Pagnol. Its Muslim community settled progressively over the decades, mostly from the 1960s onward, with families arriving from Algeria and Morocco to work in the factories of the Huveaune valley. It is well integrated into local life today.

Access from Marseille
The Marseille to Toulon TER train line stops at Aubagne station in about twenty minutes from Saint-Charles. The Aubagne tramway, which connects the station to the town centre, helps with getting around downtown. To reach Chemin du Merlançon, you then need a bus or a car, as the mosque is not in the centre. The A50 motorway links Marseille to Aubagne in about twenty minutes outside rush hour.
Local context
Aubagne has been part of the Aix-Marseille-Provence metropolitan area since 2016. The town long had its own industry, especially around pottery and roof tiles, whose legacy is still visible in several districts. The Muslim community, mostly of Maghrebi origin, takes an active part in local associations and shops, with several halal businesses in the centre and along Avenue Antide Boyer.
