Islâh Mosque

The Islâh Mosque is one of the major mosques in the northern districts of Marseille, in the 15th arrondissement. It welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers, Friday prayer, and serves as a gathering place for religious festivals for families across the area.

Getting there

The mosque is set in the Saint-Louis district, north of the city. Metro line 2 to Bougainville station, then a bus towards Saint-Louis, is the most direct way to reach it by public transport from the centre. By car, the Saint-Louis exit off the A55 leaves you a few minutes away. Street parking in the surrounding blocks is easy to find outside Friday noon.

The neighbourhood

Saint-Louis and the neighbouring districts of Le Canet, La Cabucelle and Saint-Antoine form the working-class heart of the northern arrondissements, shaped by the North African migration waves of the 1960s and 1970s. You find a dense fabric of halal shops, butchers, grocers and restaurants, especially along Boulevard National and around the Merlan market. Families often live in the large housing estates built during the city's industrial expansion.

Practical advice for a visit

The hall serves a busy community and attendance is heavy on Fridays. A first visit is easier on a weekday, outside Ramadan Tarawih night prayers. Shoes come off before entering the prayer hall, clothing should cover shoulders and legs, and women cover their hair. Quiet is expected as soon as you step inside, phones are silenced.
