The L'Estaque Mosque is the place of prayer of the harbour village of the same name, in the 16th arrondissement of Marseille. It gathers local worshippers for the five daily prayers and for the Friday prayer.
Getting there
L'Estaque sits north of the city, along the coastline. L'Estaque station, served by the Marseille to Miramas TER line, is about ten minutes from Saint-Charles. Bus 35 and other RTM lines connect the village to the centre. By car, the A55 comes straight down from the north, with easier parking on the higher streets.
The neighbourhood
L'Estaque long lived from the sea, from canning and from tile-making. Immortalised by painters Cézanne, Braque and Dufy at the start of the 20th century, the village has kept its narrow streets, its fishing harbour and its seaside restaurants. The Muslim community settled with the working-class migration, around the former factories and on the hills that overlook the bay. Local shops, including several halal butchers, are found in the village and towards Saint-André.
Practical advice for a visit
The hall serves a local community and the atmosphere is family-oriented. A first visit is easier on a weekday, outside Friday noon and outside Ramadan Tarawih night prayers. Shoes come off before entering the prayer hall, clothing should cover shoulders and legs, and women cover their hair. Quiet is expected as soon as you step inside.
