Address
Place des Grands Carmes, 13002 Marseille

The Grands Carmes Mosque sits on Place des Grands Carmes, in the 2nd arrondissement of Marseille, minutes from the Vieux-Port. It welcomes worshippers from the old centre for the five daily prayers and for the Friday prayer.

Getting there

The old centre is well served. Metro line 2 at Joliette or Vieux-Port drops you a few minutes on foot. Tramway T2 also passes through the area. Walking from the Vieux-Port takes about ten minutes, up towards the Carmes and Place de Lenche. By car, access is tighter, street parking being scarce in the narrow lanes of the centre.

The neighbourhood

The Grands Carmes form one of the historic hearts of Marseille, at the foot of the Panier district. Cobbled lanes, baroque churches and old facades give the area its Mediterranean character. The commercial fabric mixes bars, grocers and restaurants of many origins. Immediate proximity to Joliette and La Major, with the cathedral and the new business districts, makes the area a central point of the city.

Practical advice for a visit

The hall serves an old-centre community and attendance rises on Friday noon. A first visit is easier on a weekday, outside Ramadan Tarawih night prayers. Shoes come off before entering the prayer hall, clothing should cover shoulders and legs, and women cover their hair. Quiet is expected as soon as you step inside.

Other mosques in Marseille

The centre and the north of Marseille have several other prayer venues. The Bilal Ben Rabah Mosque in the 2nd, the Khalid Ibn Al-Walid Mosque in the same arrondissement, the Tahara Mosque a short distance away, the As-Sunna Grand Mosque in the 3rd and the Islâh Mosque in Saint-Louis are among the options accessible from the old centre.
