The al-Taqwa Mosque is a place of prayer in the 3rd arrondissement of Marseille, close to the Belle de Mai and Saint-Mauront districts. It welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers and for the Friday prayer.
Getting there
The mosque is close to Saint-Charles station. From the forecourt, a fifteen-minute walk or a short bus ride is enough. Metro line 2 at National station also drops you a few minutes away. By car, access is via Boulevard National, with easier street parking outside Friday noon.
The neighbourhood
The 3rd arrondissement, between Belle de Mai, Saint-Mauront and Saint-Lazare, still bears the imprint of its industrial past. Converted factories and workshops, the Friche cultural centre in the former tobacco factory, faubourg housing and recent buildings form a contrasted fabric. Halal shops cluster along Boulevard National and along the side streets leading down to Cours Belsunce.
Practical advice for a visit
The hall serves a local community and attendance rises on Friday noon. A first visit is easier on a weekday, outside Ramadan Tarawih night prayers. Shoes come off before entering the prayer hall, clothing should cover shoulders and legs, and women cover their hair. Quiet is expected as soon as you step inside.
Other mosques in Marseille
The 3rd and the neighbouring arrondissements have several other prayer venues. The As-Sunna Grand Mosque a short distance away, the El Imane Mosque a few streets away, the Islâh Mosque in Saint-Louis, the Grands Carmes Mosque in the old centre and the Bilal Ben Rabah Mosque in the 2nd are among the options accessible from the neighbourhood.
