La Ciotat lies along the Mediterranean about thirty kilometres east of Marseille, set against the limestone cliffs of Cap Canaille. The town owes much of its history to its shipyards, which shaped the landscape and drew, from the middle of the twentieth century, workers from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia. The closure of the yards in the 1980s marked the town, which has since turned to yachting, large yacht repair and tourism. The Muslim community that arrived during the industrial years stayed and has grown further since.
The town's mosque
The town has one main place of worship, the La Ciotat Mosque, in the residential districts north-east of the centre. It hosts the five daily prayers as well as Friday prayer and serves as a gathering point for religious festivals and for Arabic classes.
Access from Marseille and Toulon
La Ciotat station is served by the Marseille to Toulon TER line, with a journey of about thirty minutes from Marseille Saint-Charles. The station, however, sits up in the hills, about three kilometres from the port and town centre, which means a bus or taxi ride down to the lived quarters. By car, the A50 links Marseille to La Ciotat in about thirty minutes outside the summer season.
Local context
The old centre around the port still carries the marks of the town's industrial and Provençal past, with its narrow streets and coloured houses. The former shipyards have been converted into a major yacht repair hub, the emblematic cranes still visible from the bay. The Muslim community, mostly of Maghrebi origin, takes part in local associations and businesses, with a few halal butchers in the centre and inhabited districts.
Ramadan and feast days
During Ramadan, the La Ciotat Mosque holds Tarawih prayers every evening and coordinates collective iftars on some dates. Halal shops in the centre draw a significant share of their activity from this period. For Eid, the morning prayer is held indoors, the capacity being suited to the local community.
