Grenoble, prefecture of the Isère department and heart of an urban area of nearly half a million residents, hosts a Muslim community established over several generations. The city itself gathers around ten mosques, spread across all major districts.
Where to find a mosque in Grenoble
The main prayer halls sit on the right bank of the Drac river, south and east of the historic centre: Mistral, Teisseire, Village Olympique, Malherbe, Capuche, Alliés, Abbaye. The centre also hosts several smaller venues, notably around rue Anatole France and the Villeneuve. Each neighbourhood has its local mosque, in a range of sizes, all open for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer.
Public transport access
The TAG network covers the whole commune with five tram lines (A, B, C, D, E) and a dense bus grid. Grenoble station in the city centre welcomes high-speed trains from Paris, Lyon and Marseille, and regional TER services across Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. Almost every mosque is reachable by tram, within a ten-minute walk from a stop, including those in southern neighbourhoods such as Mistral, Teisseire or Village Olympique.
Local context
Grenoble sits within a dense urban area including Échirolles to the south, Saint-Martin-d'Hères to the east, Le Pont-de-Claix further south, and Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux to the north. The city's Muslim community, drawn from North African, Turkish and Sub-Saharan backgrounds, is organised around long-standing associations, some of which run venues welcoming several hundred worshippers. Major religious festivals often gather in municipal sports halls made available for the occasion.
