Échirolles is the second-largest commune in the Grenoble metropolitan area, directly south of Grenoble. It hosts three listed Muslim places of worship, including the Grand Mosque of Échirolles, one of the largest religious venues in the metropolitan area.
Where to find a mosque in Échirolles
The three halls split between the town centre and the western and southern districts. The Grand Mosque of Échirolles is on rue du 19 Mars 1962, near the Villeneuve d'Échirolles. Salam Mosque sits on allée du Gatinais, in the Essarts district. Ramadan Mosque is on rue Galilée, in the south-east. Each one opens for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer.
Public transport access
TAG tram line A crosses Échirolles from north to south, with stops at Auguste Delaune, Grand'Place, Échirolles Gare and Denis Papin, reaching the centre of Grenoble in about fifteen minutes. Line C serves the Essarts. TAG bus lines complete the grid towards Le Pont-de-Claix, Eybens and southern Grenoble. Échirolles station handles regional TER services from the Grésivaudan valley and the Grenoble-Gap line.
Local context
Échirolles developed from the 1960s onwards with the construction of the Villeneuve, one of the emblematic housing estates of that era of French urban planning. The commune now hosts around 37,000 residents and a well-established Muslim community, mainly of North African and Sub-Saharan origin. Grand'Place shopping centre, the Géo-Charles museum and Maurice Thorez park are the main local landmarks.
