Mantes-la-Jolie is a Yvelines sub-prefecture of around forty-four thousand inhabitants, located in the Seine loop, about fifty kilometres west of Paris. Neighbouring Mantes-la-Ville and Limay, it acts as the central town for a wider urban area of more than one hundred thousand people extending as far as the gates of Normandy.
Where the mosques are
The Grand Mosque of Mantes-la-Jolie, in the Val-Fourré district, is the main Muslim place of worship in the town and one of the most frequented in the Yvelines department. It holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. The Othmane Ibn Affane Mosque and the Les Garennes Mosque, also in the northern part of the town, complete the offer for the district's residents. Several other associative rooms exist in the town and in Mantes-la-Ville, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry in the directory.
Access from Paris
Mantes-la-Jolie station is served by Transilien line J trains from Gare Saint-Lazare, and by line N from Montparnasse via Versailles. The journey takes between forty minutes and one hour depending on the service. RER line E now reaches Mantes as part of the EOLE westward extension, providing a direct alternative to eastern Paris. By car, the A13 links Mantes to Paris in about an hour outside rush hour.
The local context
Mantes-la-Jolie is organised around two very different poles: the historic centre, dominated by the Notre-Dame collegiate church and the old bridge over the Seine, and the Val-Fourré district, one of the largest social housing estates in France, in deep transformation since the 2000s. The local Muslim community is large and diverse, with long-established North African, West African and Turkish roots and a particularly well organised associative life.
Ramadan and community life
During Ramadan, the Grand Mosque of Mantes-la-Jolie holds iftar and Tarawih night prayers with large crowds. Halal shops in Val-Fourré, in the town centre and in Mantes-la-Ville stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Val-Fourré market, very lively, is one of the largest in the region and a key supply point throughout the month of Ramadan.
