Ivry-sur-Seine is a Val-de-Marne commune of around sixty-three thousand inhabitants, immediately south-east of Paris, on the left bank of the Seine opposite Charenton-le-Pont. Neighbouring Vitry-sur-Seine, Le Kremlin-Bicêtre and Paris (thirteenth arrondissement), it is a dense urban hub, marked by its working-class history and strong popular identity.

Where the mosques are

The An Nour Mosque is the main Muslim place of worship in the town. It holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Several other associative rooms exist in Ivry and in the neighbouring communes, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry in the directory.

Access from Paris

Metro line 7 serves the town with the Mairie d'Ivry terminus station, connecting the town centre to Châtelet in about twenty minutes. Ivry-sur-Seine station, on RER C, provides a fast link to the Paris left bank. Tramway T9, between Porte de Choisy and Orly-Gaston Viens, crosses the town. A dense urban bus network completes coverage.

The local context

Ivry is organised around several poles: the town centre around the town hall, the Ivry-Port district along the Seine, undergoing deep urban transformation, the plateau and Petit-Ivry to the south. The commune hosts large 1970s architecture housing estates and a significant artistic and associative community. The local Muslim community is large and diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots, in a commune historically marked by the presence of many immigrant populations.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the An Nour Mosque holds iftar and Tarawih prayers with large crowds. Halal shops, present in several districts and particularly around the Mairie and Petit-Ivry, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Ivry-centre and Petit-Ivry markets are reference supply points throughout the month.

A commune of south-east Paris

Ivry-sur-Seine is one of the closest communes to Paris, alongside Vitry-sur-Seine, Le Kremlin-Bicêtre and Charenton-le-Pont. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque from any starting point in the region.
