Grand Mosque of Mantes-la-Jolie

The Grand Mosque of Mantes-la-Jolie is the town's main Muslim place of worship and one of the most frequented in the Yvelines department. Located in the Val-Fourré district, it is a central landmark for the Muslim community of the whole Mantes area.

A grand mosque of Val-Fourré

The Grand Mosque of Mantes-la-Jolie welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. It plays a particularly important role during the month of Ramadan, when the nightly Tarawih prayers draw large crowds, as well as during the major religious holidays (Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha). Its location in Val-Fourré, the largest social housing estate in the western Paris region, makes it a gathering place for the whole urban area.

Mantes-la-Jolie and its Muslim community

Mantes-la-Jolie is a Yvelines sub-prefecture of around forty-four thousand inhabitants, central town of a wider urban area of more than one hundred thousand people. The local Muslim community is long established and diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots rooted in the industrial and urban history of Val-Fourré. It relies on several neighbourhood mosques, including Les Garennes Mosque and the Othmane Ibn Affane Mosque, in addition to the Grand Mosque.

Access and transport

Mantes-la-Jolie station is served by Transilien line J trains from Gare Saint-Lazare and line N from Montparnasse via Versailles, in forty minutes to one hour. RER line E, extended westward as part of the EOLE project, now reaches Mantes and provides a direct alternative to eastern Paris. By car, the A13 links Mantes to Paris in about an hour outside rush hour. From the station, an urban bus network serves Val-Fourré.

Advice for visitors

As in any place of worship, appropriate dress is expected, and shoes must be removed before entering the prayer hall. Friday prayer and major religious holidays attract particularly large crowds; arriving early is recommended.
