Suresnes is a Hauts-de-Seine commune of around fifty thousand inhabitants, immediately west of Paris, on the slopes of Mont Valérien, opposite the Bois de Boulogne. Neighbouring Puteaux, Nanterre and Rueil-Malmaison, it is a dense urban hub, marked by its working-class history, the resistance memory around Mont Valérien and the immediate proximity of the La Défense business district.

Where the mosques are

The Salam Mosque, on rue des Velettes, is the main Muslim place of worship in the town. It holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Several other associative rooms exist in Suresnes and in the neighbouring communes, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry in the directory.

Access from Paris

Tramway T2, between Pont-de-Bezons and Porte de Versailles, serves the town with the Suresnes-Longchamp and Belvédère stops. Suresnes-Mont-Valérien station, on Transilien line L from Saint-Lazare, connects the town to Paris in about ten minutes. RER A is accessible in a few minutes at La Défense. By car, the Suresnes bridge and the A14 quickly connect the town to Paris and to the western suburbs.

The local context

Suresnes is organised around several poles: the town centre around the town hall, the Cité-Jardins and Mont Valérien districts, a former key site of the resistance and today national memorial of Fighting France, and the Seine bank. The commune hosts cultural facilities such as the Jean-Vilar theatre and a dense associative fabric. The local Muslim community is present and diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the Salam Mosque holds iftar and Tarawih prayers. Halal shops, present in several districts and in neighbouring Nanterre, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Caron market and the town centre market are reference supply points throughout the month.

A commune of western Paris

Suresnes is one of the central communes of the western Paris region, alongside Puteaux, Nanterre and Rueil-Malmaison, and adjoins the La Défense business district. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque from any starting point in the region.
