Versailles is the prefecture of Yvelines, a commune of around eighty-five thousand inhabitants about twenty kilometres west of Paris. Famous for its palace, the former capital of the Kingdom of France under Louis XIV, it remains today a major administrative, university and military centre of the western Paris region.

Where the mosques are

The Muslim Socio-Cultural Centre of Versailles is the main Muslim place of worship in the town. It holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Several other associative rooms exist in the neighbouring communes, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry in the directory.

Access from Paris

Three stations serve the town: Versailles-Château-Rive-Gauche on RER C, Versailles-Chantiers on RER C, Transilien N and U and many TER lines, and Versailles-Rive-Droite on Transilien L. Journeys to Paris take between thirty and forty minutes depending on the line. By car, the A13 and N12 link Versailles to Paris in about thirty minutes outside rush hour. A dense urban bus network completes coverage.

The local context

Versailles is organised around several districts: the historic centre around the palace and Notre-Dame district, the Saint-Louis district to the south, Montreuil to the east and the residential districts of Porchefontaine, Clagny and Chantiers. The commune hosts the Versailles-Saint-Quentin university, the judicial court, several renowned high schools and the military academy. The local Muslim community is present and diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the Muslim Socio-Cultural Centre of Versailles holds iftar and Tarawih prayers. Halal shops, present in several districts and particularly towards Chantiers, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Notre-Dame market, one of the oldest in the Paris region, is a reference supply point throughout the month.

A prefecture of Yvelines

Versailles is the administrative centre of Yvelines, alongside Vélizy-Villacoublay, Saint-Cyr-l'École and Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque from any starting point in the region.
