Fontenay-sous-Bois is a Val-de-Marne commune of around fifty-five thousand inhabitants, immediately east of Paris, between Vincennes and Nogent-sur-Marne. At the gates of the Bois de Vincennes, it combines older pavilion districts, large housing blocks and a very active commercial town centre.
Where the mosques are
The Essalam Mosque and the ACMF Mosque (Association cultuelle musulmane fontenaysienne) are the two main Muslim places of worship in the town. They hold the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Several other associative rooms exist in the town and in Vincennes, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry in the directory.
Access from Paris
Fontenay-sous-Bois station, on RER A, connects the town to Nation in about ten minutes and to Châtelet-Les Halles in a quarter of an hour. Val-de-Fontenay station, on RER A and E as well as on the future metro line 15 East, is a major hub of the eastern Paris region. Tramway T1 crosses the town. A dense urban bus network serves the different districts.
The local context
Fontenay-sous-Bois is organised around several poles: the historic town centre around the Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois church, the Cité des Larris, La Redoute, and the Val-de-Fontenay hub to the north-east, which concentrates offices, shops and recent housing. The local Muslim community is diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots, and an associative life structured around the two main mosques.
Ramadan and community life
During Ramadan, the Essalam Mosque and the ACMF Mosque hold iftar and Tarawih prayers. Halal shops, present in several districts and along avenue de la République, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Fontenay market and the Larris market are key supply points throughout the month.
A commune immediately east of Paris
Fontenay-sous-Bois is one of the communes of the eastern inner ring, alongside Vincennes, Nogent-sur-Marne and Montreuil. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque from any starting point in the region.
