Nanterre is the prefecture of Hauts-de-Seine, west of Paris, between La Défense and Rueil-Malmaison. The town combines three faces: the historic centre around the Cathedral and the University, the social housing districts of Les Fontenelles and Petit-Nanterre in the north, and the Terrasses fringe facing La Défense in the south. The Muslim community in Nanterre is large, structured since the 1960s by successive waves of Algerian, Moroccan and more recently West African migration.

Where the mosques are

Two entries sit in the directory for Nanterre. Ibn Badis Institute, on Avenue Georges Clemenceau, is the main place of worship in town, opened in 2015 in a new building holding over a thousand people. Emir Abdelkader Mosque, on Avenue de la Commune de Paris, serves the Petit-Nanterre district, further north.

Access from Paris

RER A serves Nanterre through Nanterre-Ville, Nanterre-Université and Nanterre-Préfecture stations. From Châtelet-Les Halles, the trip takes under twenty minutes. RER E now serves Nanterre-La Folie since its 2024 extension. Transilien line L stops at Nanterre-Université. Tramway T2 links La Défense to Porte de Versailles along the southern edge of the town.

Local context

Nanterre hosts the Paris Nanterre University, which has played a historic role since May 1968. The immediate proximity of La Défense, Europe's leading business district, shapes part of the local economy. The old town centre keeps a working-class identity, with the Saturday market on Place du Marché and halal shops along Avenue Georges Clemenceau and Boulevard du Général Leclerc. The Fontenelles district and Petit-Nanterre, inherited from the 1960s, keep a strong community cohesion.

Ramadan and neighbourhood life

During Ramadan, Ibn Badis Institute brings together up to a thousand worshippers every evening for Tarawih prayers. Emir Abdelkader Mosque, smaller in scale, holds the same night prayers with a neighbourhood following. Eid prayers bring several thousand people together in gyms booked for the occasion. Arabic classes for children and Quranic study circles run year-round in the adjacent rooms.

The centre of the metropolitan area

Nanterre belongs to the Paris metropolitan area. RER A offers direct access to Auber and Châtelet in under twenty minutes, so worshippers from Nanterre easily reach the mosques of central and eastern Paris (Grand Mosque of Paris, Nour Mosque in the 12th). The directory covers the whole inner belt.
