Ibn Badis Institute is the main Muslim place of worship in Nanterre. Opened in July 2015, it occupies a new twenty-four-metre-high building at 227 Avenue Georges Clemenceau, halfway between the town centre and the Petit-Nanterre district. The main hall can hold over a thousand worshippers. The name honours Abdelhamid Ibn Badis, an Algerian reformer and theologian of the early twentieth century.
Getting there
Nanterre-Ville station (RER A, line L) is fifteen minutes away on foot along Avenue Clemenceau. From Paris, RER A takes under twenty minutes from Châtelet-Les Halles or Auber. Transilien line L takes around twenty minutes from Saint-Lazare. From La Défense, bus 258 runs directly along Avenue Clemenceau. Tramway T2 reaches La Défense in ten minutes and gives quick access to the southern part of the town.
The neighbourhood
Avenue Georges Clemenceau is a shopping street crossing Nanterre from south-west to north-east. Around the institute stand the food shops, grocers, halal butchers and restaurants that shape neighbourhood life in Les Fontenelles. The Saturday market on Place du Marché is fifteen minutes away on foot. The historic centre, with Sainte-Geneviève Cathedral and the former town hall, is ten minutes away by bus.
Practical advice for a visit
The institute serves its worshippers first. The hall's large capacity makes reception more flexible than in smaller associative rooms, but a first visit is easier outside Friday noon and outside Ramadan Tarawih night prayers. Shoes come off before entering the prayer hall, women cover their hair, and clothes should cover shoulders and legs. Quiet is expected as soon as you step inside.

The other listed Nanterre prayer room, Emir Abdelkader Mosque, is fifteen minutes away on bus 158 towards Petit-Nanterre. On the Paris side, the Grand Mosque of Paris in the 5th is thirty-five minutes away on RER A then métro 7. Nour Mosque in the 12th is reached in forty minutes on RER A. The neighbouring Rueil-Malmaison mosques complete the network to the west.
