Drancy is a Seine-Saint-Denis commune of around seventy-two thousand inhabitants, about ten kilometres north-east of Paris. Neighbouring Le Bourget, Bobigny, Le Blanc-Mesnil and Bondy, it is a popular urban hub, marked by its working-class history and by the memory of the internment camp that was the main departure point for the deportation of Jews from France during the Second World War.

Access from Paris

Drancy station, on RER B, connects the town to Gare du Nord in about fifteen minutes. Tramway T1, between Noisy-le-Sec and Asnières-Gennevilliers-Les Courtilles, serves the town with several stops. By car, the A86 and N2 link Drancy to Paris and to the north-east suburbs. A dense urban bus network completes coverage.

Drancy is organised around several poles: the town centre around the town hall, the Cité de la Muette with the internment camp memorial, the Économie district and the pavilion zones of the plateau. The commune is marked by a dense pavilion fabric characteristic of the north-east Paris suburbs. The local Muslim community is large and diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the Drancy Mosque holds iftar and Tarawih prayers with large crowds. Halal shops, present in several districts and in neighbouring Bobigny, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The town centre market and the Économie market are reference supply points throughout the month.
