Montfermeil is a Seine-Saint-Denis commune of around twenty-eight thousand inhabitants, on the Aulnay plateau, about twenty kilometres east of Paris. Neighbouring Clichy-sous-Bois, Le Raincy and Livry-Gargan, it is linked to the literary history of Victor Hugo's Les Misérables, in which the Thénardier inn is set here.

Where the mosques are

The Selimiye Mosque, on avenue Jean-Jaurès, is an important Muslim place of worship in the town, part of the Ditib Turkish network. The Louanges Mosque complements the offer for residents of the Bosquets district and the plateau. They hold the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Several other associative rooms exist in Montfermeil and Clichy-sous-Bois, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry.

Access from Paris

Tramway T4, between Bondy and Hôpital de Montfermeil, connects the town to RER E at Bondy. From Bondy, the journey to Gare Saint-Lazare via Magenta takes about twenty minutes. The future metro line 16 of the Grand Paris Express, whose Clichy-Montfermeil station is under construction, will allow more direct connections to Paris and Saint-Denis in the coming years. By car, the N3 and A3 are the main links to the metropolis.

The local context

Montfermeil is organised around a wooded plateau and several very different districts: the historic town centre, the Bosquets at the border with Clichy-sous-Bois, and the pavilion districts to the north and east. The commune hosts the Château des Cèdres and several important green spaces. The local Muslim community is diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots particularly present around Ditib.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the Selimiye Mosque and the Louanges Mosque hold iftar and Tarawih prayers. Halal shops, present in several districts and in Clichy-sous-Bois, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Montfermeil market and the Clichy-sous-Bois market are key supply points throughout the month.
