Emir Abdelkader Mosque stands at 179 Avenue de la Commune de Paris, in the Petit-Nanterre district, in the north of the town. The name honours Emir Abdelkader (1808-1883), Algerian spiritual and political leader known both for his resistance to French colonisation and for his 1860 intervention to protect Damascus Christians. The hall first serves neighbourhood worshippers, in complement to the Ibn Badis Institute located at the other end of Avenue Clemenceau.
Getting there
From Nanterre-Préfecture (RER A), bus 158 reaches Petit-Nanterre in around ten minutes. Nanterre-Université station (RER A, line L) is fifteen minutes away on the same bus line. From Paris, RER A to Nanterre-Préfecture takes around twenty minutes from Châtelet-Les Halles. Transilien line L is an alternative from Saint-Lazare. The A86 motorway runs right nearby, which makes car access easy from anywhere in the western inner suburbs.
The neighbourhood
Petit-Nanterre is a working-class district inherited from the 1960s and 1970s, marked by large housing schemes and by urban renewal projects launched since the 2000s. The immediate proximity of Parc départemental André-Malraux, one of the largest in Hauts-de-Seine, offers a green space of over twenty-five hectares five minutes away on foot. Avenue de la Commune de Paris concentrates the local food shops and community grocers.
Practical advice for a visit
The place serves its worshippers first. A first visit is easier outside Friday noon and outside Ramadan Tarawih night prayers. Shoes come off before entering the prayer hall, women cover their hair, and clothes should cover shoulders and legs. Quiet is expected as soon as you step inside.
