Mosques in Meaux

Meaux is a Seine-et-Marne sub-prefecture of around fifty-five thousand inhabitants, on the banks of the Marne river, about forty kilometres east of Paris. Central town of a wider urban area of more than one hundred and thirty thousand people, it acts as the urban hub of the French Brie, between the Paris metropolis and Champagne.

The Meaux Muslim Center is the town's main Muslim place of worship. It holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Access from Paris

Meaux station, on Transilien line P from Gare de l'Est, connects the town to Paris in about thirty minutes. Line P also serves Chelles and Vaires-sur-Marne, main stops on the route. By car, the A4 links Meaux to Paris in about forty minutes outside rush hour. An urban bus network serves the different districts of the town.

The local context

Meaux is organised around a bend of the Marne river, with a historic centre dominated by the Saint-Étienne Cathedral and the episcopal palace, which houses the Bossuet Museum. The Beauval and Pierre-Collinet districts, more recent, concentrate a large share of the population. The town is also famous for its Brie cheese and its mustard. The local Muslim community is diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the Meaux Muslim Center and the other associative rooms hold iftar and Tarawih prayers. Halal shops, present in Beauval and in the town centre, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Meaux market, one of the oldest in the region, is a reference supply point throughout the month.
