Argenteuil is the most populated commune in Val-d'Oise with around one hundred and ten thousand inhabitants, immediately north-west of Paris, on the right bank of the Seine. A former industrial and market-gardening town, it is now one of the main urban centres of the northern Seine loop, between the Paris metropolis and the Montmorency valley.

Where the mosques are

The Al Ihsan Mosque and the Assalam Mosque are the two main Muslim places of worship in the town, both located in the most densely populated districts. They hold the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Several other associative rooms exist in Argenteuil and in the neighbouring communes of the Seine loop, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry in the directory.

Access from Paris

Argenteuil station is served by Transilien line J from Saint-Lazare, with a journey time of about fifteen minutes. Val d'Argenteuil station, on the same line, serves the north of the commune. Tramway T2, between Pont-de-Bezons and Porte de Versailles, stops at the southern edge of Argenteuil. A dense bus network completes local coverage. By car, the A15 links Argenteuil to Paris via Porte de Clichy in about twenty minutes outside rush hour.

The local context

Argenteuil covers more than seventeen square kilometres, with strongly contrasting districts: a commercial town centre around the Saint-Denys Basilica, residential slopes to the north, large housing estates in Val d'Argenteuil and Val Notre-Dame. The local Muslim community is long established and diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots rooted in the working-class and associative history of the town.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the two main mosques hold the nightly Tarawih prayers with large crowds. Halal shops, numerous in the town centre and along avenue Gabriel Péri, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Héloïse market, one of the largest in the Paris region, is a key supply point throughout the month.

A hub of the northern Seine loop

Argenteuil is one of the main urban centres of the northern Seine loop. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the Paris metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque from any starting point in the region.
