The Essalam Mosque of Fontenay is a Muslim place of worship located in the north of the town, in the Val-de-Fontenay sector. It is one of the two main landmarks for the Muslim community of Fontenay-sous-Bois and the eastern inner ring of Paris.

A mosque of northern Fontenay

The Essalam Mosque welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. It takes on particular importance during the month of Ramadan, with the nightly Tarawih prayers and iftar gatherings, as well as during the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.

Fontenay and its Muslim community

Fontenay-sous-Bois is a Val-de-Marne commune of around fifty-five thousand inhabitants, immediately east of Paris and at the gates of the Bois de Vincennes. The local Muslim community is diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots. The ACMF Mosque, near the town centre, complements the town's religious offer.

Access and transport

Val-de-Fontenay station, on RER A and E as well as on the future metro line 15 East, is the major hub of the sector and lies a few minutes' walk away. Fontenay-sous-Bois station, on RER A, connects the town to Nation in about ten minutes. Tramway T1 also serves the town, alongside a dense urban bus network.

Advice for visitors

As in any place of worship, appropriate dress is expected, and shoes must be removed before entering the prayer hall. Friday prayer and major religious holidays attract large crowds; arriving early is recommended.
