Boulogne-Billancourt is a Hauts-de-Seine commune of around one hundred and twenty-one thousand inhabitants, immediately west of Paris, on the right bank of the Seine opposite the Bois de Boulogne. A former working-class town marked by the history of the Renault factories on Seguin island, it is today one of the most populous communes in the Paris region, with a high density of offices, cultural facilities and recent housing.
Where the mosques are
The Muslim Cultural Centre of Boulogne, known locally as L'Olivier, is the main Muslim place of worship in the town. It holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Several other associative rooms exist in Boulogne and in the neighbouring communes, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry in the directory.
Access from Paris
Metro lines 9 and 10 serve the town, with the Marcel Sembat, Billancourt, Pont de Sèvres and Boulogne-Jean-Jaurès stations. Tramway T2, between Pont-de-Bezons and Porte de Versailles, stops at Meudon-sur-Seine and Musée de Sèvres, immediately nearby. By car, the Sèvres and Saint-Cloud bridges connect Boulogne to Paris and to the western suburbs. A dense urban bus network completes coverage.
The local context
Boulogne-Billancourt is organised around several poles: the town centre around the town hall and Notre-Dame church, the Trapèze and Seguin island district, undergoing deep transformation since the closure of the Renault factories, the Silly-Gallieni district and the north towards Porte d'Auteuil. The commune borders the Roland-Garros stadium, hosts the Albert-Kahn departmental museum and the Seine Musicale. The local Muslim community is present but discreet, with North African, West African and Turkish roots.
Ramadan and community life
During Ramadan, the Muslim Cultural Centre of Boulogne holds iftar and Tarawih prayers. Halal shops, present in several districts and in neighbouring Issy-les-Moulineaux, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Escudier market and the Billancourt market are reference supply points throughout the month.
A major town of western Paris
Boulogne-Billancourt is one of the central communes of the western Paris region, alongside Issy-les-Moulineaux and Neuilly-sur-Seine. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque from any starting point in the region.
