Mosques in Gennevilliers

Gennevilliers is a Hauts-de-Seine commune of around forty-eight thousand inhabitants, located north-west of Paris in the northern loop of the Seine. A direct neighbour of Asnières, Colombes and Villeneuve-la-Garenne, it is as famous for its river port, one of the largest in the Paris region, as for the working-class history of its population.

Where the mosques are

The Grand Mosque of Gennevilliers, in the Grésillons district, is the main Muslim place of worship in the town. It holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer, with large crowds at religious holidays. The Safa Mosque, on a smaller scale, serves the southern part of the town. Several other associative rooms exist in Gennevilliers, spread between the Village and the Luth, but do not yet appear in the directory for lack of usable address information.

Access from Paris

Metro line 13 serves Gennevilliers with the Gabriel-Péri and Les Courtilles stations, about fifteen minutes from Saint-Lazare. RER C crosses the town with the Gennevilliers and Les Grésillons stations, useful for reaching the left bank. Tramway T1, between Asnières and Noisy-le-Sec, serves the eastern part of the town. A dense bus network completes local coverage. By car, the A86 and N186 cross the town, with access to Paris via Porte de Clichy.

The local context

Gennevilliers is marked by the divide between the residential town and the vast port and industrial zone of the Seine loop. The Village keeps an older urban fabric around the Sainte-Marie-Madeleine church and the town hall. Le Luth and Les Grésillons, inherited from post-war planning, have been the subject of major renewal. The local Muslim community is long established, largely linked to the North African and West African migrant workforce drawn by the factories of the loop.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the Grand Mosque of Gennevilliers holds iftar and Tarawih night prayers, with especially large crowds at the end of the month. Halal shops are concentrated around the Grésillons market and along avenue Gabriel-Péri, where several butchers and grocers stay open late into the evening. The Village market, on place Jean-Grandel, is held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
