La Courneuve is a Seine-Saint-Denis commune of around forty-four thousand inhabitants, on the Plaine de France, about seven kilometres north-east of Paris. Neighbouring Aubervilliers, Saint-Denis, Le Bourget and Drancy, it is a popular urban hub, marked by its industrial past and by the presence of vast green spaces around the Georges-Valbon departmental park.

Where the mosques are

The UOIF Mosque, which also hosts the historical headquarters of the Union of Islamic Organisations of France, is the main Muslim place of worship in the town. It holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Several other associative rooms exist in La Courneuve and in the neighbouring communes, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry in the directory.

Access from Paris

Metro line 7 serves the town with the La Courneuve-8 Mai 1945 terminus station, connecting the centre to Châtelet in about twenty minutes. La Courneuve-Aubervilliers station, on RER B, connects the town to Gare du Nord in about ten minutes. Tramway T1 crosses the town from east to west. An urban bus network completes coverage.

The local context

La Courneuve is organised around several districts: the centre around the town hall, the Quatre-Mille estate, undergoing deep urban renewal for several years, and the Six-Routes district. The commune hosts the Georges-Valbon departmental park, one of the largest green spaces in the Paris region, and several sports and cultural facilities. The local Muslim community is large and diverse, with particularly long-established North African, West African and Turkish roots.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the UOIF Mosque holds iftar and Tarawih prayers with large crowds. Halal shops, numerous in several districts and in neighbouring Aubervilliers, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Quatre-Routes market and the town centre market are reference supply points throughout the month.

A commune of Seine-Saint-Denis

La Courneuve is one of the main towns of the Plaine de France, alongside Aubervilliers, Saint-Denis and Le Bourget. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque from any starting point in the region.
