Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine sits along the northern edge of Paris, between the 17th and 18th arrondissements on one side and the Seine and Clichy on the other. The town has an old and mixed Muslim community, heir to several waves of North African and West African migration drawn by the Peugeot and Alstom factories through the twentieth century. It is also known for the flea market, a huge second-hand and retail enclave that spills over into Clignancourt.
Where the mosques are
The heart of Muslim life in Saint-Ouen sits in the north-east of the town, around Rue des Docks and the Docks district reshaped since 2010. This is where the Al Hashimi Grand Mosque, the town's main place of worship, stands. Streets between Vieux Saint-Ouen and Garibaldi also host several smaller prayer rooms, not yet listed here until their details are confirmed.
Access from Paris
Métro line 13 serves Saint-Ouen through Garibaldi, Mairie de Saint-Ouen and Carrefour Pleyel. Line 14, extended to Mairie de Saint-Ouen in 2020, gives direct and fast access from Châtelet and Saint-Lazare. RER C stops at Saint-Ouen station, on the Pontoise line. From Porte de Clignancourt (line 4), it takes ten to fifteen minutes on foot to reach the flea market.
Local context
The Docks district was deeply reshaped by a redevelopment scheme launched in the 2010s: former industrial wastelands replaced by housing, offices and Docks park. That transformation changes the landscape around the Grand Mosque, without touching the older fabric of Rue du Landy and Vieux Saint-Ouen. The town has also hosted the headquarters of several large companies since the 2010s, which raises the office population during the day.
Ramadan and feast days
During Ramadan, the Al Hashimi Grand Mosque holds Tarawih prayers every evening after Isha and a collective iftar on some days. Halal shops around Rue du Landy and Avenue Michelet, on the 18th side, draw most of their business from this period. Eid prayers traditionally take place indoors, or in a larger venue booked for the occasion.
The centre of the metropolitan area
Saint-Ouen belongs to the Paris metropolitan area. Worshippers crossing the town on line 14 or RER C easily reach the other mosques of Paris, notably those of the 18th (Sociocultural Institute of Muslims, Porte des Poissonniers) and the 10th ('Ali Ibn Al Khattab Mosque). The directory covers the whole inner belt.
