Montreuil is the second most populous town of Seine-Saint-Denis with over one hundred thousand inhabitants. It borders Paris at Porte de Montreuil and stretches up to Les Hauts-de-Montreuil, on the slopes rising towards Fort de Rosny. The town is known for its walled peach orchards, its artist workshops and its dense associative fabric.

Where the mosques are

The main listed Muslim place of worship in Montreuil sits on Rue Gaston Lauriau, in Le Bas-Montreuil, right next to Croix-de-Chavaux station (line 9). Other associative prayer rooms operate in the town, especially in Bel-Air, La Boissière and Les Ruffins districts, but do not yet appear in our directory for lack of usable address information.

Access from Paris

Three line 9 stations serve Montreuil: Robespierre, Croix-de-Chavaux and Mairie de Montreuil. The trip from Nation takes under ten minutes. Extended line 11 serves the north-east of the town (Serge Gainsbourg, Montreuil-Hôpital, Coteaux-Beauclair) and reaches Châtelet in fifteen minutes. Tramway T1 crosses northern Montreuil and connects to Bobigny and Saint-Denis.

The local context

Le Bas-Montreuil grew in the nineteenth century around textile mills and workshops. The lower part keeps this suburban architecture, with many halal shops and dense neighbourhood life around Croix-de-Chavaux market. Les Hauts-de-Montreuil, more residential, saw suburban houses emerge in the twentieth century. The town hosts one of the largest populations of Maghrebi and Sahelian origin in eastern Paris.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, Tarawih night prayers gather large crowds; attendance often exceeds hall capacity and spills into courtyards or pavements. Halal shops in Le Bas-Montreuil, especially around Rue de Paris and Avenue Faidherbe, stay open late for iftar. Croix-de-Chavaux and La Boissière markets are the go-to supply points.

A town of the Paris metropolitan area

Montreuil is one of the major towns of Paris inner suburbs. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the other eastern towns: Pantin, Aubervilliers, Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine. The Paris page centralises the metro-area map and helps find a mosque quickly from any starting point.
