Athis-Mons is an Essonne commune of around thirty-three thousand inhabitants, in the Paris outer ring, immediately south of Orly airport. Squeezed between the Seine to the east and the Longboyau plateau to the west, the town forms a continuous urban area with Juvisy-sur-Orge and Paray-Vieille-Poste, about fifteen kilometres from Notre-Dame.
Where the mosques are
The ABPE prayer hall, at 90 avenue du 18 Avril 1944, holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Run by a local association, it is easily reachable by phone. The Al-Taqwa Mosque, in the Noyer-Renard district, adds a second place of worship in the southern part of the town. A few other associative rooms exist but are not yet in the directory for lack of usable address information.
Access from Paris
Athis-Mons station is served by RER C, about thirty minutes from Gare d'Austerlitz. Juvisy-sur-Orge station, less than a kilometre from the town centre, combines RER C and RER D, which makes it one of the main railway hubs of the southern Paris region. RATP and Île-de-France Mobilités buses link the town to Orly, Villeneuve-Saint-Georges and Corbeil-Essonnes. By car, the A6 and then the N7 provide direct access from the Paris left bank, with travel times that vary greatly depending on the hour of the day.
The local context
Orly's immediate proximity leaves a lasting mark on the soundscape and urban history of Athis-Mons. Noyer-Renard, a working-class district inherited from post-war reconstruction, holds most of the public facilities and much of the associative life. The Seine banks, around the Arbalète park, offer a quieter counterpoint. The Muslim community has been present since the industrial migration waves of the 1960s and 1970s, mainly of North African and West African origin.
Ramadan and community life
During Ramadan, the mosques of Athis-Mons hold iftar and Tarawih night prayers. Halal shops in the town centre and along the route de Fontainebleau, as well as those on the Juvisy plateau and in Vigneux-sur-Seine, stay open late for iftar. The Athis market, on Place du Général-de-Gaulle, is held on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
A town of the southern outer ring
Athis-Mons belongs to the southern Paris suburbs, in the Essonne department. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and makes it easy to find a mosque from any starting point in the region.
