Garges-lès-Gonesse is a Val-d'Oise commune of around forty-four thousand inhabitants, located north of Paris, on the border with Seine-Saint-Denis. A direct neighbour of Sarcelles and Villiers-le-Bel, it belongs to the dense urban area that surrounds Le Bourget airport and extends the inner suburbs to the north.
Where the mosques are
Two main places of worship are listed in Garges. The El-Irshad Mosque, at 94 avenue Paul-Vaillant-Couturier, holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. The Hamza Mosque, in the Dame-Blanche district, plays a similar role for residents of the northern part of the town. Several other associative rooms complete the offer, sometimes on a smaller scale, and appear on the town map without a detailed entry in the directory yet, for lack of usable address information.
Access from Paris
Garges - Sarcelles station is served by RER D, about twenty minutes from Gare du Nord. Transilien line H also runs nearby through Villiers-le-Bel - Gonesse - Arnouville. The T5 rubber-tyred tramway connects Saint-Denis station to the Sarcelles-Lochères market, serving several stops within Garges. A bus network completes the coverage towards Bonneuil-en-France, Gonesse and Charles-de-Gaulle airport. By car, the A1 and N1 offer quick access from northern Paris.
The local context
Garges-lès-Gonesse is organised around several large housing estates built in the 1960s and 1970s: Les Doucettes, La Muette and La Dame-Blanche. Since the 2000s, the town has been the subject of major urban renewal operations that have deeply reshaped the built environment. The Muslim community is large and diverse, with long-established North African, West African and South Asian roots, and a rich associative life.
Ramadan and community life
During Ramadan, the mosques of Garges hold iftar and Tarawih night prayers. Halal shops are concentrated in the shopping centres of La Muette and Les Doucettes, and along avenue Paul-Vaillant-Couturier. The Sarcelles-Lochères market, right next door, is one of the best supplied in West African and North African products of the whole Paris region. Shops stay open late in the evening for iftar.
A town of the northern Paris region
Garges-lès-Gonesse belongs to the first northern ring of Val-d'Oise, in direct continuity with Seine-Saint-Denis. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque anywhere in the region.
