Orléans is the prefecture of the Loiret department and the core of Orléans Métropole, with around 117,000 inhabitants in the city and 290,000 across the wider urban area. Sitting on the Loire river, the city has long served as a crossing point between Paris and the south-west of France, and its Muslim community, settled here for several decades, is present in the historic centre, the La Source district to the south and the Argonne district to the north-east.
Where to find a mosque in Orléans
Three Muslim places of worship are listed within the city limits. Ibn-Badiss Mosque occupies a low-key address at 82 rue des Carmes, in the old town, a short walk from Place du Martroi. Assounah Mosque serves the north-east, on the Argonne side. Annour Mosque is located on rue Jules Ferry, in the La Source district, on the south bank of the Loire. All hold the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. To broaden the choice, Fathi Mosque in Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle, the mosque of Saint-Jean-de-Braye, Annour Mosque in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin and the AMF Cultural Center in Fleury-les-Aubrais are all within a fifteen-minute drive.
Public transport access
The TAO network covers the whole urban area with two tram lines. Line A links Fleury-les-Aubrais and Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle to the La Source district via the city centre. Line B crosses the city from east to west, from Saint-Jean-de-Braye to La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin. Both meet at De Gaulle station, in the heart of the city. TAO buses complete the grid towards the outer ring communes. Orléans-Centre station and Les Aubrais station, connected to each other, offer direct services to Paris-Austerlitz in about an hour. The A10 heads north to Paris, the A71 south to Vierzon, the A19 east to Sens.
Local context
Orléans carries the memory of Joan of Arc, celebrated every year in early May during the Johannic festivities. Sainte-Croix cathedral dominates the eponymous square, while Place du Martroi and rue de Bourgogne concentrate shopping and nightlife. The banks of the Loire, redesigned around twenty years ago, host the Festival de Loire every two years. Halal butchers and Middle-Eastern grocers are well represented on rue de Bourgogne, in the Argonne district and in La Source, around the Place d'Arc shopping centre and the Blossières market. The Parc Floral in La Source, at the southern edge of the city, rounds out the leisure options.
