Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle sits along the western edge of Orléans, on the north bank of the Loire, with close to 17,000 inhabitants. Long a farming commune before being caught up by the expansion of the central city, it mixes an old village around its church with wide detached-house neighbourhoods, and several large social housing estates to the south, including Les Chaises and Les Salmoneries.

Public transport access
Tram line A of the TAO network runs along the south of the commune with the Pont Européen stop, heading towards central Orléans and La Source. TAO bus lines complete the service towards La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, Ingré and Ormes, and towards the retail parks north of Orléans. Les Aubrais station in Fleury-les-Aubrais is less than ten minutes away by car. Road access is via the N152 from Orléans, the RD2157 from Blois to the west, and the A10 Saran exit from the north.
Local context
Saint-Jean-de-la-Ruelle long lived on market gardening and floriculture, before urban growth from Orléans turned it into a residential commune. The old village keeps its Saint-Jean-Baptiste church and a few historic houses, while the southern districts, redeveloped as part of the ANRU programme, now host new public amenities. Halal butchers and Middle-Eastern grocers are mainly found in the Chaises and Salmoneries districts and along rue Charles Beauhaire. The park by the town hall and the Loire riverside walk, a few minutes from the centre, offer places to unwind.
