Aubervilliers, in Seine-Saint-Denis, forms the north-eastern edge of Paris, with Saint-Denis to the west and Pantin to the south. The town has a long working-class tradition and one of the youngest and most diverse populations in the metropolitan area. Muslim presence is massive, with an old Maghrebi community joined over the past twenty years by a large population of Chinese, South Asian, Malian, Mauritanian and Syrian origin.

Where the mosques are

A single entry currently sits in the directory for Aubervilliers: Al Ansar Mosque, in Ruelle de la Grande Cour, in the Marcreux district. Other prayer rooms operate around La Villette Quatre-Chemins and Fort-de-l'Est, but they are not yet documented precisely enough to be published.

Access from Paris

Métro line 7 serves Aubervilliers through Aubervilliers-Pantin Quatre Chemins, Fort d'Aubervilliers and Mairie d'Aubervilliers, the latter opened in 2022 with the line 12 extension. Line 12 now offers Aimé Césaire and Mairie d'Aubervilliers, which has sharply cut travel time from Concorde and Madeleine. Tramway T3b crosses the southern edge of the town and gives direct access to Porte de la Chapelle. RER B stops at La Courneuve-Aubervilliers, in the north.

Local context

The town hosts the busiest fabric market in the Paris region, around Place du Marché and the Chinese wholesale district along Avenue Victor-Hugo. The Fort d'Aubervilliers, a former military structure, is now used as a shared garden, with a long-running redevelopment scheme under way. The immediate proximity of Parc de la Villette to the south makes Aubervilliers well connected to cultural and sports venues.

Ramadan and feast days

During Ramadan, Al Ansar Mosque holds Tarawih prayers every evening and occasionally hosts iftar meals. Halal shops around the town hall and the central market draw most of their trade from this period. Eid prayers bring together thousands of people in venues booked for the occasion or in adjacent school courtyards.

The centre of the metropolitan area

Aubervilliers belongs to the Paris metropolitan area. From lines 7 and 12, worshippers reach in fifteen minutes the mosques of the 10th ('Ali Ibn Al Khattab Mosque), 18th and 19th (Adda'Wa Mosque). The directory covers the whole inner belt.
