The Selimiye Mosque of Montfermeil is a Muslim place of worship located on avenue Jean-Jaurès, part of the Ditib Turkish network (Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs). Its name honours the famous Selimiye Mosque of Edirne, a masterpiece of the architect Sinan.
A Turkish mosque of the Aulnay plateau
The Selimiye Mosque welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. It is a central landmark for the Turkish community of Montfermeil and Clichy-sous-Bois. It takes on particular importance during the month of Ramadan, with the nightly Tarawih prayers and iftar gatherings, as well as during the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
Montfermeil and its Muslim community
Montfermeil is a Seine-Saint-Denis commune of around twenty-eight thousand inhabitants, on the Aulnay plateau. The local Muslim community is diverse, with particularly long-established North African, West African and Turkish roots around Ditib. The Selimiye Mosque complements the offer alongside the Louanges Mosque.
Access and transport
Tramway T4, between Bondy and Hôpital de Montfermeil, serves the town. From Bondy, RER E connects Haussmann-Saint-Lazare in about twenty minutes. The future metro line 16 of the Grand Paris Express, with the Clichy-Montfermeil station, will transform the town's accessibility. By car, the N3 and A3 are the main links to the metropolis.
Advice for visitors
As in any place of worship, appropriate dress is expected, and shoes must be removed before entering the prayer hall. Friday prayer and major religious holidays attract large crowds; arriving early is recommended.
