Romainville is a Seine-Saint-Denis commune of around twenty-eight thousand inhabitants, immediately east of Paris, between Les Lilas and Noisy-le-Sec. On the heights of the Romainville plateau, it was long famous for its mushroom farms and its military fort, now converted.

Where the mosques are

The Niya Mosque and the AFT Mosque (Association pour la Fraternité et la Tolérance) are the two main Muslim places of worship in the town. They hold the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Several other associative rooms exist in Romainville and in the neighbouring communes of Bagnolet and Noisy-le-Sec, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry.

Access from Paris

Metro line 5 connects Porte de Pantin to Romainville via Bobigny-Pablo-Picasso station, a few hundred metres from the town. Tramway T1, between Asnières and Noisy-le-Sec, serves the south of the territory. The extended metro line 11, whose Serge-Gainsbourg station opened in 2024, now connects Rosny-Bois-Perrier to Châtelet in about twenty minutes. A dense bus network completes coverage.

The local context

Romainville is organised around the plateau and the lower part of the commune, with strongly contrasting districts: a commercial town centre, the Bas-Pays and Marcel-Cachin estates, pavilion districts to the north. The commune hosts the Fort of Romainville, several logistics bases inherited from its industrial past, and the Corcy, one of the major cultural facilities of the Greater Paris metropolis. The local Muslim community is diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the Niya Mosque and the AFT Mosque hold iftar and Tarawih prayers. Halal shops, present in the town centre and along avenue Gaston-Roussel, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Romainville market and the Lilas market are local supply points throughout the month.
