Lille is the prefecture of the Nord department and the seat of the Métropole Européenne de Lille (MEL), France's fourth-largest urban area with over a million inhabitants. Located at the crossroads of the main railway lines linking Paris, Brussels and London, the city has long been home to a large and diverse Muslim community, whose roots trace back in part to the migrations tied to the textile and mining industries of northern France.
Where to find mosques in Lille
The city has more than ten mosques, mostly located in the Wazemmes, Fives, Moulins and Lille-Sud districts. Key places of worship include Mosquée El Moustafa, Mosquée Omar ibn Al Khattab, Mosquée Es-Salam, Mosquée Assounna, Mosquée de Lille el Forkane, Mosquée Fraternité, Mosquée Ennour, Mosquée Al Imane, Mosquée El-Houda and Mosquée Badr. Each one offers the five daily prayers and Friday prayer, and many organise Arabic classes, Quran learning and cultural activities.
Getting around
Lille has one of the densest public transport networks in northern France. Its two automated VAL metro lines cover almost every district, complemented by the historic Mongy tramway serving Roubaix and Tourcoing. Lille-Flandres and Lille-Europe stations are major hubs on the European rail network: TGV to Paris in one hour, Eurostar to London and Brussels, and regional trains across the MEL. This connectivity makes Lille's mosques easy to reach from anywhere in the metropolitan area and beyond.
Ramadan and religious celebrations
During the month of Ramadan, Lille's mosques extend their schedules to welcome worshippers for Tarawih prayers, often to sizeable congregations. Some mosques organise communal iftars or coordinate meal distributions. For Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, several venues rent additional halls to accommodate the large numbers attending. Exact timings are announced each year by each mosque, and it is best to check directly with the venue.
The Lille metropolitan area
Beyond Lille proper, the Métropole Européenne de Lille brings together more than 90 municipalities. Roubaix and Tourcoing, historically tied to Lille through the industrial conurbation of the 19th century, also host a significant number of mosques. Villeneuve-d'Ascq, Marcq-en-Barœul, Wattrelos, Mons-en-Barœul, Loos, Wattignies, Hem, Halluin, Seclin, Comines and Armentières each have at least one Muslim place of worship. Our directory covers all of these municipalities to help you find the nearest mosque to your home or workplace.
