Les Ulis is an Essonne commune of around twenty-four thousand inhabitants, on the Courtabœuf plateau, about twenty kilometres south-west of Paris. Created from scratch in the 1970s as a new town linked to the university and scientific expansion of Orsay, it is today a central urban hub of the Saclay plateau.
Where the mosques are
The Grand Mosque El Andalous, on rue de l'Armagnac, and Les Ulis Mosque are the two main Muslim places of worship in the town. They hold the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Several other associative rooms exist in Les Ulis and in Orsay, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry in the directory.
Access from Paris
Les Ulis does not have an RER station on its territory, but Orsay-Ville station, on RER B, is about three kilometres away and connected by a regular shuttle bus. From Orsay, the journey to Châtelet-Les Halles takes about thirty minutes. By car, the A10 directly serves the town from Paris via the N118, in about thirty minutes outside rush hour. A dense urban bus network serves the different districts.
The local context
Les Ulis is organised in districts built in a single stroke in the 1970s, around the Ulis 2 shopping centre and the cultural park. The commune is directly linked to the Courtabœuf activity zone, one of the largest in the Paris region, and to the Paris-Saclay university hub. The local Muslim community is large and diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots rooted in the working-class and associative history of the town.
Ramadan and community life
During Ramadan, the Grand Mosque El Andalous and Les Ulis Mosque hold iftar and Tarawih prayers with large crowds. Halal shops, present in several districts and in the shopping centre, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Les Ulis market is a reference supply point throughout the month.
