Villiers-le-Bel is a Val-d'Oise commune of around twenty-eight thousand inhabitants, in the Montmorency valley, about fifteen kilometres north of Paris. Neighbouring Sarcelles and Gonesse, it combines an old centre and large residential districts, between the agricultural plains of the northern Paris region and Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle airport.
Where the mosques are
The Grand Mosque of Villiers-le-Bel, on rue Julien Boursier, is the town's main Muslim place of worship. It holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. The AFMV Le Pavillon Mosque, on rue d'Hérivaux, complements the offer for residents of the Puits-la-Marlière district and the surrounding pavilion sector. Several other associative rooms exist in the town and in Sarcelles, some of them shown on the map without a detailed entry.
Access from Paris
Villiers-le-Bel-Gonesse-Arnouville station, on RER D, connects the town to Paris Gare du Nord in about twenty minutes. The urban bus network serves the main districts, with connections to Sarcelles, Gonesse and Saint-Denis. By car, the N1 and A1 link Villiers-le-Bel to the Paris ring road in about thirty minutes outside rush hour.
The local context
Villiers-le-Bel is organised around an old centre with the Saint-Didier church, a listed historical monument, and more recent housing districts in Puits-la-Marlière and Derrière-les-Murs-de-Monseigneur. The local Muslim community is large and diverse, with long-established North African, West African and Turkish roots, and a particularly well organised associative life between the Grand Mosque and Le Pavillon.
Ramadan and community life
During Ramadan, the Grand Mosque and the AFMV Mosque hold the nightly Tarawih prayers with large crowds. Halal shops in the town centre and Puits-la-Marlière stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Sarcelles-Lochères market, nearby, is the reference supply point for the whole Montmorency valley throughout the month.
A commune of the Montmorency valley
Villiers-le-Bel is part of the Montmorency valley, alongside Sarcelles and Garges-lès-Gonesse. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the Paris region. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque from any starting point in the region.
