Aulnay-sous-Bois is one of the most populous towns in Seine-Saint-Denis, with nearly eighty-five thousand inhabitants. Located north-east of Paris, halfway between the ring road and Charles-de-Gaulle airport, it covers close to sixteen square kilometres, making it one of the largest communes in the inner suburbs.

Where the mosques are

The Assalam Mosque, in the Rose-des-Vents district, holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. It is one of the town's main places of worship, along with several associative rooms spread between northern Aulnay and the historic town centre. Some appear on the town map without a detailed entry in the directory yet, for lack of usable address information. The local Muslim community is organised around several religious associations, long established in the town.

Access from Paris

Aulnay-sous-Bois station is served by RER B, about twenty-five minutes from Gare du Nord, as well as by Transilien line K towards Crépy-en-Valois. Tramway T4 crosses the town from south to north, linking Bondy to Aulnay and then Clichy-sous-Bois via a new branch opened in recent years. A dense network of RATP buses reaches districts further from the stations. By car, the A3 and N2 provide quick access from northern Paris.

The local context

Aulnay-sous-Bois is made up of three main areas: old Aulnay in the south, around the town hall and the Dumont park; central Aulnay around the station and the O'Parinor shopping centre; and northern Aulnay, with the large Rose-des-Vents, Merisiers and Balagny districts inherited from 1970s urban planning. A significant part of the local Muslim community, of very varied sensibilities, has been settled there for several generations.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the Assalam Mosque and the town's other places of worship hold iftar and Tarawih night prayers. Halal shops in the town centre around the station, and in northern Aulnay along the route de Bondy, stay open late into the evening. The old Aulnay market, on Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, is held on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday mornings.

A Seine-Saint-Denis town

Aulnay-sous-Bois belongs to the north-eastern inner suburbs of Paris. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque quickly from any starting point in the region.
