Villeneuve-la-Garenne is a Hauts-de-Seine town wedged between the Seine to the south and the A86 motorway to the north, on the Seine-Saint-Denis boundary. Around twenty-five thousand people live on a compact, flat territory inherited from a large-housing-scheme planning of the 1960s and 1970s. The marina and the Seine loop give the town a river character rare in the inner suburbs.

Where the mosques are

The main Muslim place of worship is the Grand Mosque of Villeneuve-la-Garenne, on Rue Arthur Guillemain, at the heart of the République district. The hall holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer.

Access from Paris

Villeneuve-la-Garenne has no metro station or RER inside its territory. The closest station is Gennevilliers (RER C, line 13 by connection), fifteen minutes from Saint-Lazare. From that station, tramway T1 serves Villeneuve at Les Courtilles and La Noue. RATP buses 137, 166, 177 and 178 link the town to nearby metro stations. From northern Paris, A1 then A86 give quick car access via Pont de Gennevilliers.

The local context

The town is shaped by its river geography and by the huge Parc départemental des Chanteraines, one of the largest in Hauts-de-Seine, spreading nearly one hundred hectares to the west. Urban fabric combines refurbished 1960s slabs and towers, older suburban districts (old Villeneuve) and recent riverside developments. Qwartz shopping centre, opened in 2014, has become a regional hub.

Ramadan and community life

During Ramadan, the Grand Mosque holds iftar and Tarawih night prayers. Nearby halal shops in Gennevilliers, especially around Place Voltaire, complete the community offer. Villeneuve market, on Place du Marché, opens several mornings a week and concentrates the local food shops.
