The Assalam Mosque of Argenteuil is a Muslim place of worship in the southern part of the town, in a densely populated sector. Its name, meaning "peace" in Arabic, is one of the most common for French-speaking mosques.
A mosque of southern Argenteuil
The Assalam Mosque welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. It takes on particular importance during the month of Ramadan, with the nightly Tarawih prayers and iftar gatherings, as well as during the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. It complements the offer alongside the Al Ihsan Mosque, also located in the commune.
Argenteuil and its Muslim community
Argenteuil is the most populated commune in Val-d'Oise, with around one hundred and ten thousand inhabitants, in the northern Seine loop. The local Muslim community is long established and diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots rooted in the working-class and associative history of the town. The south of the commune is particularly dense in neighbourhood facilities.
Access and transport
Argenteuil station, on Transilien line J from Saint-Lazare, connects the town to Paris in about fifteen minutes. Tramway T2, between Pont-de-Bezons and Porte de Versailles, serves the south of the commune. An urban bus network completes coverage. By car, the A15 links Argenteuil to the Paris ring road in about twenty minutes outside rush hour.
Advice for visitors
As in any place of worship, appropriate dress is expected, and shoes must be removed before entering the prayer hall. Friday prayer and major religious holidays attract large crowds; arriving early is recommended.
