Champigny-sur-Marne is a Val-de-Marne commune of around seventy-six thousand inhabitants, in a bend of the Marne river, about ten kilometres east of Paris. Neighbouring Joinville-le-Pont, Saint-Maur-des-Fossés and Chennevières-sur-Marne, it is marked by its working-class past, its dense pavilion urban fabric and a significant historical Portuguese community.

The Al Amine Mosque and the Boullereaux Mosque are the two main Muslim places of worship in the town. They hold the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. Access from Paris

Champigny and Les Boullereaux stations, on RER A, connect the town to Nation in about fifteen minutes. Tramway T1, with the ongoing extension to Val-de-Fontenay, serves the north-east of the town. The future metro line 15 South of the Grand Paris Express, with the Champigny-Centre and Bry-Villiers-Champigny stations, will transform the town's accessibility in the coming years. A dense bus network completes coverage.

The local context

Champigny is organised around the bend of the Marne and several poles: the commercial town centre, Les Boullereaux to the south-east, Le Plateau and Bois-l'Abbé to the north. The commune hosts the Memorial to Fighting France and vast green spaces along the Marne. The local Muslim community is diverse, with North African, West African and Turkish roots, and an associative life structured around the two main mosques.

During Ramadan, the Al Amine Mosque and the Boullereaux Mosque hold iftar and Tarawih prayers. Halal shops, present in several districts and in Saint-Maur-des-Fossés, stay open late in the evening for iftar. The Champigny and Bois-l'Abbé markets are key supply points throughout the month.
