Stains is a Seine-Saint-Denis commune of around thirty-eight thousand inhabitants, located north of Paris between Saint-Denis and Pierrefitte-sur-Seine. Famous for its 1920s garden city, now listed, the town combines a remarkable urban heritage with more recent districts inherited from post-war reconstruction and urban renewal.
Where the mosques are
The Grand Mosque of Stains, at 7-13 avenue de Stalingrad, is the town's main Muslim place of worship. It holds the five daily prayers, Friday prayer, and large gatherings for the major religious holidays. It is reachable by phone and maintains an official website where practical information for worshippers is published. Several other associative rooms complete the offer in Stains, notably around Clos-Saint-Lazare and the town centre, without yet appearing in the directory for lack of usable address information.
Access from Paris
Stains does not have an RER station within its boundaries but benefits from several easily accessible neighbouring hubs. Pierrefitte - Stains station, on RER D, is less than two kilometres from the town centre. Tramway T5, between Saint-Denis station and the Sarcelles-Lochères market, serves the southern part of the town. The T11 Express tramway, opened in 2017 between Le Bourget and Épinay-sur-Seine, runs nearby. A bus network completes local coverage. By car, the A1 and A86 offer quick access from Paris.
The local context
Stains is organised around three main urban areas: the garden city, an architectural gem of the interwar social movement, listed as a historic monument; the old town centre around the Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church; and the large housing estates of Clos-Saint-Lazare and La Cerisaie, which have been the subject of major renewal operations since the 2000s. The local Muslim community is long established, with North African, West African and Turkish roots deeply rooted in the town's working-class history.
Ramadan and community life
During Ramadan, the Grand Mosque of Stains holds iftar and Tarawih night prayers. Halal shops are concentrated along avenue de Stalingrad, in the town centre and along the axes towards Saint-Denis, where the offer of butchers, grocers and pastry shops is particularly dense. Shops stay open late in the evening for iftar, especially around Pierrefitte - Stains station.
A town of northern Seine-Saint-Denis
Stains belongs to the northern part of Seine-Saint-Denis, between Saint-Denis and Val-d'Oise. Neighbouring pages cover Paris and the main towns of the metropolitan area. The Paris page centralises the regional map and helps find a mosque from any starting point in the region.
