Mosquée Abou Bakr is the main Muslim place of worship in Lens. It welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers and for the Friday prayer, with a marked attendance at midday.
Getting there
The mosque is located in the south of Lens, about ten minutes on foot from Lens railway station served by TER Hauts-de-France trains from Lille and Arras. Several Tadao bus lines pass nearby. By car, access is via the A21 or A26 motorway through the Lens-centre exit.
The neighbourhood
The area still bears the traces of the mining basin's past, with its miners' cottages and reconverted housing estates. The centre of Lens, a few minutes away, concentrates shops, markets and halal food outlets, particularly around Grand-Place and boulevard Basly. The Louvre-Lens museum and the Bollaert-Delelis stadium shape the local geography.
Practical advice for a visit
The prayer hall is spacious and well attended during peak times. A first visit is easier outside Friday noon and outside Ramadan Tarawih night prayers. Shoes come off before entering the prayer hall, clothing should cover shoulders and legs, and women cover their hair. Quiet is expected as soon as you step inside.
