Lens is the main town of the Pas-de-Calais coalfield, about thirty kilometres south of Lille. With around 30,000 inhabitants, it is the hub of a dense conurbation shaped by coal mining and has several Muslim prayer venues that welcome worshippers from the town and the surrounding pit villages.

By car, the town is connected to the A21 and A26 motorways, providing quick access to the rest of Hauts-de-France.
Local context
Lens is home to the Louvre-Lens, an offshoot of the Paris museum opened in 2012, and to the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, the historic ground of Racing Club de Lens. The town has preserved a mining heritage recognised by UNESCO through the workers' housing estates, the corons and the slag heaps that shape the coalfield landscape. The town centre concentrates shops, markets and local services.
