Mahdi Mosque is at 2 route des Romains, in Hurtigheim, a rural commune of Bas-Rhin located in the Kochersberg, about twelve kilometres west of Strasbourg. With a capacity of around 250 people, it holds the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. It serves worshippers from the commune, the canton of Truchtersheim and the neighbouring villages of the Kochersberg.
Getting there
Hurtigheim is served by the Réseau 67 bus lines, connecting it to Truchtersheim and to Strasbourg via the central railway station. The Kuttolsheim railway halt, on the Strasbourg-Molsheim line, is a few minutes away. By car, the A351 is reached in around ten minutes and joins the centre of Strasbourg through the Wolfisheim exit. The nearby A4 also gives quick access to Saverne and northern Bas-Rhin.
The neighbourhood
Hurtigheim has preserved the village fabric typical of the Kochersberg, with its Alsatian half-timbered houses, its farms and its Sainte-Marguerite church. Route des Romains, which recalls the Roman presence in the region, crosses the village from west to east. The commune is surrounded by an agricultural plain devoted to cereals, hops and cabbage for sauerkraut. Local shops and halal grocers are found in the neighbouring towns and above all in Strasbourg.
Practical advice for a visit
The hall is suited to village life. Friday noon attendance fills the venue, a first visit runs more smoothly on another day. Shoes come off at the entrance, women cover their hair, clothes should cover shoulders and legs. A separate area is provided for women. Quiet is expected from the door. For a specific need, asking locals or coming just before prayer times is safer.
