The Hamza Mosque is a Muslim place of worship in Garges-lès-Gonesse, located in the Dame-Blanche district in the north of the commune. Its name honours Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib, uncle of the Prophet and companion of the early days of Islam.
A mosque of the Dame-Blanche
The Hamza Mosque welcomes worshippers for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer. It takes on particular importance during the month of Ramadan, with the nightly Tarawih prayers and iftar gatherings, as well as during the celebrations of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. It acts as a neighbourhood place of worship for residents of the northern part of the town.
Garges-lès-Gonesse and its Muslim community
Garges-lès-Gonesse, in Val-d'Oise, has around forty-four thousand inhabitants. The local Muslim community is large and diverse, with long-established North African, West African and South Asian roots and a rich associative life. The Hamza Mosque is one of the main places of worship in the town alongside the El-Irshad Mosque.
Access and transport
Garges - Sarcelles station, on RER D, is the main access point to the town from Paris, about twenty minutes from Gare du Nord. Tramway T5, which links Saint-Denis station to the Sarcelles-Lochères market, serves several stops within Garges. A bus network completes coverage towards Bonneuil-en-France, Gonesse and Charles-de-Gaulle airport. Street parking is available in the surrounding streets.
Advice for visitors
As in any place of worship, appropriate dress is expected, and shoes must be removed before entering the prayer hall. Friday prayer and major religious holidays attract large crowds; arriving early is recommended.
