Mosques in Bordeaux

Bordeaux, prefecture of the Gironde department and France's sixth largest city, hosts a Muslim community established since the industrial migrations of the 1960s, mainly of North African, Senegalese and Turkish origin. The city, at the heart of the Bordeaux metropolitan area, has three identified places of worship, spread across the centre, Grand Parc and Saint-Michel districts.

Where to find a mosque in Bordeaux

Bordeaux Mosque and Nour el Mohamadi Mosque both sit in the historic Saint-Michel district, south of the historic centre, a few streets apart. To the north, Grand Parc Mosque serves a wide catchment around place de l'Europe. Each opens for the five daily prayers and Friday prayer, with peak attendance at Friday noon. Talence, south of the commune, rounds out the local network for the student and residential districts of the left bank.

Public transport access

The TBM network covers the whole commune with three tram lines (A, B, C, plus line D towards Eysines and Le Bouscat), a dense bus grid complemented by the Corol and Lianes express lines, and the BAT3 river boats on the Garonne. Bordeaux Saint-Jean station, south of the city, welcomes high-speed trains from Paris (two hours), Marseille, Toulouse and Nantes, along with regional TER services across Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Saint-Michel mosques are reachable by tram line C or bus 5, and Grand Parc mosque by bus lines 15 and 32.

Local context

Bordeaux sits within a dense metropolitan area that includes Talence to the south, Mérignac to the west, Bègles to the south and Cenon on the right bank. The Saint-Michel district, around the belltower and the covered market, has historically concentrated halal shops, Middle-Eastern grocers and North African and Senegalese restaurants. Grand Parc and La Bastide, further north and on the right bank, complete this network. Worshippers who live or work in Bordeaux sometimes attend mosques in Talence or on the right bank depending on proximity.
